Jenny Lawson’s new book How To Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay is not only a funny, enjoyable read as all her books are, but it is also a how to book on calming your inner and outer anxiety. Tips and examples of what sometimes comes before the actual anxiety hit, but also ways to calm that not so helpful inner voice. More important, it’s ok to sometimes not be okay…it happens to the best of us!
Through stories of her own and her reactions to certain situations, not only does she give calming advice, but also in her can you believe this happened to me way has the reader laughing out loud! Anyone with anxiety is always looking for tips and tricks to figure out how best to handle certain anxious situations. Well Lawson who has had years and years of experience gives the best advice as well as, wait for it…artwork!
The chapters are filled with honesty, motivation but also the fact that sometimes your mind will disappoint you. She gives examples of having that happen as well. Her insights are exceptional and her advice invaluable.
Never one to shy away from her most embarrassing mishaps, she tries to explain her thought process as strange as it may sound. Believe it or not this in itself is a major win for anyone who has constant anxiety, sleeplessness, OCD or ADHD.
One of her most important pieces of advice is to find someone who can either walk you back to reality or help you through the anxiety. The advice I found most helpful was accept what you have and work at trying to use these tools to help yourself. Know that sometimes it may not work but that’s okay. Learn from it.
Some chapters give great advice. Breathing lessons, ways of shutting down your mind, a relaxing hobby and even post it notes when you don’t think you can arrange even one thought.
How To Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay is a workbook for anxious people to be read and re-read. Her agonizing honesty is refreshing, but don’t be fooled by her witty charm. Crazy can happen, will probably happen, but her stories and sincerity are on every single page!
