Mixed Plate by Jo Koy

Comedian Jo Koy’s memoir Mixed Plate is of course hilarious, but truly heartbreaking and heartwarming as well. As seems to be the theme with comedians, he did not have an easy childhood being raised by a single mom with four children after her husband moved them to the United States from the Philippines. Part Pilipino and part white, upon coming to America as a young boy, Koy noticed at once something was not right with this picture!

His Pilipino mother was extremely strict and Koy was always pushing her to the limit. With no father figure in his life and an older brother who had schizophrenia and was very abusive, to say Koy’s childhood was filled with trauma would be putting it mildly. So, he turned to VHS tapes and television especially comedy specials with Eddie Murphy and Whoopie Goldberg as a way to drown everything out. He knew at an early age he wanted to be like them and was told by friends and family he was very funny. His mother wanted him to work a nine to five job with benefits after going to college. She still does!

The book opens with his mother and all his siblings at a store trying to win a television. His mother you see is very, very frugal. But the lengths they went to win the television is a masterclass in being thrifty!

Fame did not come easy, and it came much later in his life. He would not stop and worked many jobs while trying to hone his craft. Back then, the only true comedians were white, and all the rest had days of the week, other than a Saturday to perform. But that did not stop Koy. He created his own comedy machine by renting out spaces and hiring other comedians with his mother and himself selling tickets to the events!

Televison gigs were hard to come by and he was continually turned down to star in a comedy show as the lead comic. So, he decided to create one on his own. One they could not take no for an answer to. And he did just that. With the help of his mother, her eye doctor and himself, he produced a comedy special. When Netflix (who had constantly turned him down) saw it, they bought it. And that’s how Koy finally put his feet in the cement of the comedy business. Just as an aside, since then Netflix has created at least four comedy specials of Koy’s.

Along the way, he met and married a woman named Angie and they have a son, little Joe. Although the marriage lasted less than a year, they are each other’s best friends and have co-parented since Koy finally realized when his son was young that he didn’t want to be his father.

Mixed Pate is filled with humorous, sometimes unbelievably horrible stories about his life growing up and the pain he went through. But Koy seems to have come out of that time strong and with a perspective on life everyone should have. The one theme throughout the memoir is love will get you through. It is quite obvious just how much he cares for his family, friends and fans. But his mother is still waiting for him to get a job with benefits!

On The Plus Side by Jenny L. Howe

On The Plus Side is a funny, warm-hearted, empathetic look at the realities of not being what society defines as “normal”. It’s about personal introspection, insecurities, falling in love and re-falling in love with oneself.

Everly Winters is content with her life. She is a receptionist, loves art and creativity which bodes well at the company she works for. She has a bit of a crush on one of her co-workers. But she lives her life quietly, ever since her grandmother died.

Suddenly, she is thrust onto a reality show called On The Plus Side which helps overweight women with all aspects of their life. She loves the show but is horrified that someone nominated her (whose identity she is still looking for) to actually be a participant. The show tries to transform the person by giving them the tools to step out of their comfort zone with new ways of dressing, making them look inside themselves as well as having family involvement. This family thing makes Everly very nervous!

As Everly begins the process of having cameras film her all the time, she begins to open her eyes to the camera operator, Logan who is not only fabulously handsome, but kind and comforting.

But, having to look back on her life is not something she really wants to do. There is pain in that process. Her mother has always pushed her to lose weight so she could look and feel better, something she has always felt she didn’t need thanks to her late grandmother’s words of wisdom that she just always be her beautiful self both inside and out. She is nervous what her mother will say on camera!

Funny enough, Everly does begin the metamorphous process and starts to self-reflect and discover the person she used to be when her grandmother was alive. She also finds she and Logan have a great deal in common and begin having feelings, which because this is reality television, the fans as well as the producers think is fabulous!

But just as she is beginning to find the old Everly, and also perhaps love, it could all be taken away as the producers have a very different outlook on what is happening in her life! Is she strong enough yet to stick up for herself and every other past and future contestant of On The Plus Side?

This fantastic story is an honest, humorous yet serious look at being fat in today’s world which in this book is an ok word to use. Its thesis is to accept oneself, love everything about yourself because you don’t have to answer to anyone BUT yourself. Embrace who you are, not who others want you to be. And you are not alone!

The Paris Notebook by Tessa Harris

The Paris Notebook is a fast-paced spellbinding account which is loosely based on historical events in which a German doctor diagnosis Adolf Hitler and through this discovers he is unfit mentally and tries to make this information public in some way before it is too late. It’s a love story as well, but it is also the story of a young woman whose father died because of Hitler, whose mother is mentally ill and she must take care of her, but who finds herself now in the position to assist in stopping Hitler a man she despises. A true and strong heroine, she will stop at nothing to get the information to where it needs to go.

After Katja Heinz’s father dies, she is now left to care for her emotionally unstable mother in Germany during the Hitler regime. She needs the money, but it seems no one will hire her until a psychologist, Dr. Viktor makes her an offer. She is told to transcribe his notes into a notebook about a patient he treated. He tells her she is not allowed to know who the patient is, and she must keep what she is doing secret. She is just grateful for the job.

But, very quickly, it is obvious that this secret patient is none other than Adolf Hitler and what Dr. Viktor has discovered is very important and if Hitler knew what was being typed and there was a notebook they would be hunted down and killed.

And just like that Katja is thrown into a world which she knows nothing about as they try to find someone who will accept the notebook and publish the findings. They must smuggle the notebook into France to meet a journalist, Daniel who works for a paper. Their hopes are raised that perhaps their prayers have been answered.

But after all that they refuse to publish it and Dr. Viktor and Katja go back to Germany. Except now it seems, Hitler’s men know they are up to something and begin to threaten them and their families.

Soon, Katja is on her own and once again must find her way alone now with the smuggled notebook back to France to once again try and find help. She understands her life is in danger and as she plays a game of cat and mouse and hide and seek with the Nazi’s who are on her tail. She must endure whatever they do and keep going forward in the name of all those she loves and have loved. She and Daniel get close and this is her only salvation.

But what is the end result? As innocent Katja turns into an espionage spy and a heroine who grows stronger with every obstacle they try to throw in front of her, she could possibly lose everything, including her life to put the notebook in the hands of someone who can help.

Nine Lives by Peter Swanson

Nine names on a list. Sent to each of them. No one knows the others. Then they begin to be killed. Have I gotten your attention? I hope so! Nine Lives has a plot on the level of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, but on steroids. It’s premise, perfection, reading the story will give you not only anxiety, but will also convince you that you must finish the book to find out what is happening which will make you tear through the novel faster than any you have ever read. The ending? Magnificently amazing!

Nine people from all around the country receive a piece of mailed to them. On it are a list of names in which all of them are included. Nothing else. Some are curious while others think it must be some marketing scam and throw it away.

Until a name on the list is found dead, drowned at the seashore in a small Maine town with the list in his hand.

Then, a second name on the list ends up shot to death. One person on the list begins to take notice. Jessica Winslow, an FBI agent who is also on the list realizes something is happening and decides to try and investigate the names before she becomes another casualty.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no connection to these people. As the number of dead begin to rise, even with police protection, there seems to be more questions than answers. The nine seem to be heading to all dead.

Who has set this macabre massacre in motion? Why? No clues are ever left, and nobody left alive at the scenes. Whoever this is makes absolutely no mistakes.

As we follow the lives of the soon to be departed, a nurse, a professor, a businessman, a musician, a mistress an actor, a writer, we wait with horrible anticipation as to who will be next, how will it happen? You will think, why can’t I figure this out?

Nine Lives is just another Peter Swanson masterpiece. He gives absolutely nothing away until the very end with of course a few shocking twists which will blow you away! This book will keep you entertained not only while you are reading or until you finish it but will also make you obsessively think about the story even when you’re not!
